Welcome to ecohomehub.com, the UK’s most comprehensive showcase of energy efficient homes, all of which attain a minimum of Code level 4 in the Code for Sustainable Homes.

The former Housing and Planning Minister acknowledged the pivotal role played by The British Homes Awards in providing the catalyst for innovation in the way we design and construct our homes, showcasing exemplars of best practice.

These have inspired house builders and architects to respond to the challenges involved in creating carbon neutral homes and have been the genesis of initiatives such as AIM C4.

All schemes presented on this site are submissions into the British Homes Awards’ annual design competition and are designed by the UK’s leading architects.

In partnership with NHBC and the Building Research Establishment the 2007 British Homes Awards launched a design competition for the zero carbon Home for the Future.

The winning design, Green House by Gaunt Francis Architects, has since been built on the BRE Innovation Park by Britain’s premier house builder, Barratt Developments. Designed and constructed to attain Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes it was officially opened in 2008 as the first stamp duty exempt house from a major housebuilder.

The 2008 British Homes Awards continued to pioneer best practice in the drive towards low and zero carbon housing. In association with its key partners – BRE, MBE KTN and RIBA - in collaboration with Crest Nicholson, architects were challenged to design tomorrow’s sustainable Lifestyle Home to achieve Code Level 4. Multiple units of the winning design- The Avanti House- are now being built by Crest Nicholson at a site in Epsom, Surrey, with alternative construction and heating and ventilation technologies to facilitate research initiatives.

In association with CLG, Help the Aged and NHBC, the 2009 British Homes Awards addressed the challenge of housing for our ageing population, inviting designs for a Lifetime Home. The panel of Judges, chaired by RIBA President Sunand Prasad, short-listed 7 designs which were presented for reader vote. “Sunnyside-up house”, designed by Kosi Architects, attracted over 12,000 votes and was announced the winning design.

Recognising that our homes are responsible for the creation of 27% of carbon emissions and in partnership with The Gentoo Group and the National Refurbishment Centre, the 2010 British Homes Awards went retro, challenging architects to submit their innovative retrofit design solutions for a terrace of four 1960s houses in Sunderland.

The 5 designs short-listed will inspire the energy efficient refurbishment of our existing housing stock and the winner "Green for Life " by Hess Kincaid Leach- as voted by the readers of Britain's best selling quality newspaper The Daily Telegraph- was announced by RIBA President Ruth Reed at the 2010 RIBA Stirling Prize.

In partnership with RIBA, BRE and The New Homes Marketing Board the 2011 competition challenged architects to create the 21st century's answer to the classical Regency and Georgian terraced town house- incorporating environmental technologies to attain Code Level 4.

The winning scheme, Santiago, was announced by RIBA President Angela Brady at the presentation of the British Homes Awards on September 22nd.

The British Homes Awards will continue to provide the inspiration for innovation in the way we design and construct our homes, and in the process recognise, endorse and showcase exemplars of best practice.
